OIE publishes animal health surveillance guide

PARIS – The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) recently published a new guide aimed at helping animal experts implement and evaluate animal health surveillance systems.
The Guide to Terrestrial Animal Health Surveillance
was developed by international experts in surveillance methodologies, OIE said. The book provides a framework for animal health surveillance activities carried out by national veterinary services in partnership with public sector veterinarians, diagnostic laboratories, animal owners and other authorities, according to OIE.
The handbook takes into account "the complexity of animal health management, the diversity of the animal kingdom and the variety of situations in the 180 member OIE member countries," the organization noted. OIE said improving surveillance and detection of health risks related to animals will enable risk managers to limit the spread of animal diseases and minimize their impacts.
