Canada announces new halal labeling requirements

OTTAWA, Ontario – The Canadian government has developed new halal labeling requirements aimed at curbing mislabeling practices and helping consumers make informed decisions about halal foods.
The new regulations will require all food products labeled as halal to include the name of the certifying body. The government believes including the name of the certifying body on the label will help consumers obtain specific information about the standards the food has met. Manufacturers of halal products must still meet Canada's food safety standards.
"Our Government is dedicated to working with industry and consumers to improve food labeling in Canada," said Brad Butt, Member of Parliament for Mississauga - Streetsville. "By making this change, industry will be able to provide consumers with the information they need to make informed decisions about halal food products."
The new requirements will come into effect April 4, 2016. The market for halal food products in Canada is estimated at $1 billion.
