KITCHENER, Ontario – At least one employee was fired following the release of undercover video depicting workers abusing birds at Hybrid Turkeys in Kitchener, Ontario, according to TheRecord.com
. Other workers also were disciplined.
A spokeswoman for the company said disciplinary action included "termination, suspension and/or conditional reinstatement."
Mercy For Animals Canada released video footage in March. Hybrid Turkeys responded soon after by suspending four employees pending an internal investigation. At the time, David Libertini, managing director at Hybrid Turkeys, said the incident captured in the video was an "isolated event", and that a third party investigation was underway to review the company's policies and procedures.
“As an innovative, responsible company, Hybrid Turkeys is continuously looking for ways to improve our flocks and the care that we provide them at all stages in their life cycle," Libertini said in a statement on the company's website. "The cooperative research initiated with the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare will investigate ways to enhance the care and welfare of our Turkeys.”
