WASHINGTON – Hialeah, Florida-based La Autentica Foods, LLC launched a recall of approximately 117,350 lbs. of meat tamale products on concerns of Listeria monocytogenes adulteration, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the US Dept. of Agriculture reported.
The problem was discovered during a US Food and Drug Administration recall of frozen corn contaminated with Listeria. CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington, initiated a voluntary recall of frozen organic and traditional fruits and vegetables on concerns the frozen produce may be contaminated with Listeria. FDA said CRF had suspended operations at its Pasco facility on April 25 for a thorough review. FSIS said there have been no confirmed reports of illness due to consumption of the tamales.
The affected items include:
- 20-oz. PLASTIC BAG packages containing four pieces of “TAMAL EN HOJA TAMAL IN CORN HUSK.”
- 30-oz. PLASTIC BAG packages containing six pieces of “TAMAL CUBANO EN SU HOJA CUBAN TAMALE WRAPPED IN CORN HUSK WITH DICED PORK.”
- 20-oz. PLASTIC BAG packages containing four pieces of “TAMALES CUBANOS ESTILO CASERO CUBAN STYLE TAMELES WITH PORK.”
- 15.5-lb. BOX packages containing fifty pieces of “TAMALES WRAPPED IN CORN HUSK.”
- 15.5-lb. BOX packages containing forty pieces of “TAMALES ESPECIAL WRAPPED IN CORN HUSK.”
The tamales were heat-treated, not fully cooked and not shelf stable, FSIS noted. La Autentica produced the tamales from Sept. 4, 2015 to April 26, 2016. The products bear establishment number “EST. 11154” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The tamales were shipped to a retail and restaurant locations in Florida.
