WASHINGTON – Concerns about foodborne pathogens led two pet food manufacturers to launch voluntary recalls of pet treats. No illnesses have been reported in either case.
In Green Bay, Wis., Carnivore Meat Company LLC recalled two batches of Carnivore Vital Essentials raw pet treats. The US Food and Drug Administration said an independent laboratory detected Listeria
monocytogenes in samples during a recent review. FDA said dogs and cats rarely become sick from Listeria. But in humans, Listeria
can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The affected lots include:
• Vital Essentials Frozen Beef Tripe Patties, UPC 33211 00809, Lot # 10930, Best by date 20160210
• Vital Essentials Frozen Beef Tripe Nibblets, UPC 33211 00904, Lot # 10719, Best by date 12022015
FDA said the “Best By” date code and lot number is located on the back of the package. The pet treats were distributed in Washington State, California, Texas, Georgia, Illinois, Colorado, New Mexico, Florida, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Ohio and Vermont.
NatPets LLC, doing business as “I and love and you” in Boulder, Colo., issued a recall of 1,299 cases of “cow-boom!” strips – beef gullet on concerns the products are contaminated with Salmonella
. Routine sampling by an inspector for the Colorado Department of Agriculture uncovered the problem. The pet treats are supplied by a US supplier, according to the company.
