Firm recalls foodservice turkey breast products

WASHINGTON – Boston-based Puritan Foods Co. Inc. recalled 2,476 lbs. of raw boneless turkey breasts because milk, a known allergen, was not declared on the product label, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported.

FSIS personnel discovered the problem while checking product labels, the agency said. Source materials used by Puritan Foods do not contain milk, but on two dates in question, the source material was labeled as "butter basted". Milk is a sub-ingredient in butter, but the declaration did not carry over to the finished product label, FSIS said. There have been no reports of adverse reactions.

The affected product includes raw boneless turkey breasts (various weights) with pack dates of June 11 and July 18, 2014. The turkey was produced on June 11, 2014, and July 18, 2014, and bears the establishment number “P-5933” inside the USDA mark of inspection. FSIS noted that the product was distributed to a local distributor, which sold the product to hotels, restaurants and institutions in the New England area.
