Two more cases linked to Salmonella outbreak

ATLANTA – The Centers for Disease Control reported two more cases linked to a Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak that originated in Michigan. The new cases bring the total number of infected persons to 18. Seven of those infected were hospitalized. The two new cases were reported from Wisconsin, according to CDC.
Seven people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella reported eating a raw ground beef dish at the same restaurant before becoming ill. The restaurant served raw beef to customers and had acquired the product from two retailers.
Ground beef produced by Sterling Heights, Mich.-based Jouni Meats, Inc. and Gab Halal Foods in Troy, Mich., were named as likely sources of the outbreak. Jouni Meats recalled roughly 500 lbs. of ground-beef products on Jan. 24, and Gab Halal recalled 550 lbs. of ground beef on Jan. 25.
