AURORA, Ill. – Plans to implement a video-based food-defense system at OSI Group LLC’s five processing facilities in the US were announced by company officials, making it the first processing company to adopt a complete suite of remote video auditing (RVA) technology systemwide.

One of the first food companies to utilize third-party, remote-video auditing to protect its food shipments by using a combination of tamper-evident seals on trucks and Web-based video technology developed by Arrowsight Inc., OSI has expanded the technology throughout its US operations. Based in Mt. Kisco, NY, Arrowsight’s food defense-focused surveillance and third-party auditing service ensures workers are only in parts of the processing plant where they are authorized and that areas most susceptible to tampering or contamination are only accessed by approved employees. This food-defense program and service will be implemented at OSI’s five US plants in the next six months.

With the adoption of Arrowsight’s food-defense RVA, OSI’s plants will utilize the technology for applications that improve its food-safety practices, ensure employee welfare and deliver operational efficiencies.

“OSI has been working with Arrowsight since 2005 to innovate new solutions using RVA services and is proud to continue to drive new standards in the critically important area of food defense,” said David McDonald, president and COO of OSI Group, the biggest supplier of meat products to fast-food giant McDonald’s Corp.

Assessing the threat that agroterrorism poses to meat and poultry processors and what is being done to protect the most vulnerable parts of the food supply chain from intentional and unintentional contamination is the focus of a feature story in the next issue of Meat&Poultry.
