NC State grabs gold in international competition

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.– The North Carolina State meat science program claimed some notable hardware recently.

The Meat Science Group, which is a part of the Dept. of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Science at the Raleigh campus, won international recognition at ‘DFV-AAMP Quality Competition for Sausage and Ham’, held Jan. 11-13 at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison. The competition was the first event of its kind held inside the US.

IFFA is the leading international trade fair for packaging, processing and sales in the meat industry. The group hosts an international meat competition every three years in Frankfurt, Germany. The German Butchers’ Association formed a partnership with the American Association of Meat Processors (AAMP) to host this “satellite contest” in the US.

The group from NC State will be awarded a Gold Medal (50 out of 50 points) for their entry: Dry Cured Pork Capicola.

“With an award from the Butchers’ Association, our members demonstrate the international competitiveness and quality of their products,” AAMP Executive Director Chris Young said. “We Congratulate NCSU students Travis Tennant and Currey Nobles for their outstanding achievements.”

All US winners have been invited by the German Butchers’ Association to attend a ceremony at the IFFA in Frankfurt on May 10, where they will be awarded their certificates and medals.
