Maple Leaf Foods to expand Port Perry facility

PORT PERRY, Ontario – Maple Leaf Foods plans to expand a production line at the company’s Port Perry plant at a cost of C$10 million. Port Perry is a community in the township of Scugog which is northeast of Toronto.

The new line is expected to be completed by the end of July. Private-label meat pies and meat-filled pastries for major Canadian grocery chains are produced at the facility.

“The expansion of our facility is a major milestone for our team and our community, allowing us to meet demand for our products across Canada while increasing our team’s capacity and capabilities, adding up to 40 new positions,” Jeff Pett, plant manager, said in a statement.

The expansion is expected to create 40 new jobs, raising the workforce at the plant to about 90 employees. Scugog Councillor Don Kett said, “As a result of a successful collaboration between two of Scugog’s major forces, Maple Leaf Foods and Unifor Local 1090, the company has chosen Port Perry for their expansion. This announcement is a positive and exciting step toward the future of our greenbelt community.”
