Maple Leaf Foods recalls chicken breast strips

OTTAWA, Ontario – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) launched a food safety investigation after receiving reports of illnesses associated with Maple Leaf brand chicken breast strips. The company is recalling the items because they may contain a toxin produced by Staphylococcus
The affected products include Maple Leaf brand chicken breast strips in 840-g. packages with Best Before date of 2018 SE 29 and a UPC 0 63100 03089 6.
A consumer complaint triggered the recall, and the CFIA is verifying that the affected product is removed from the marketplace. Additionally, the agency is urging consumers to discard or return the recalled products. Food contaminated with Staphylococcus toxin may not look or smell spoiled, the agency said. The toxin also is not easily killed at normal cooking temperatures.
Symptoms of Staphylococcus poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and fever. Headache, muscle cramps and changes in blood pressure and pulse rate may occur in cases of severe illness.
