Almanza joins JBS as Global Head of Food Safety and Quality Assurance

Al Almanza, who recently retired from the US Dept. of Agriculture, will lead food safety efforts at JBS SA.
GREELEY, Colo. – Former Deputy Undersecretary and Administrator with the US Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, Alfred Almanza, has been appointed Global Head of Food Safety and Quality Assurance of JBS SA. Almanza announced his retirement from his roles at the USDA on July 13, where his career began in 1978 working as a meat inspector. He officially retired on July 31.
According to a statement from JBS, Almanza will be part of the company’s global leadership team and will be responsible for ensuring its operations across the world are implementing high levels of food safety standards and maintaining quality control while managing risks. He will also be tasked with maintaining and expanding access to export markets globally.
Almanza will be based in Greeley, Colorado, and report to Gilberto Tomazoni, global president of operations. Tomazoni said the expertise and passion Almanza has for food safety and ensuring public health are a welcome addition to JBS.
“During his long and storied career at FSIS, Al earned the respect and admiration of his peers for his team-based management approach and his willingness to partner with both industry and public health organizations to ensure the provision of safe, quality food to consumers,” said Tomazoni.
Almanza said he is enthusiastic about the new opportunity and starting a new career with a global meat processing company.
“I now join a team that shares my commitment to food safety and feeding the world in a safe, sustainable way,” he said. “I look forward to helping JBS maintain the highest food safety levels in the industry and putting in place best-in-class benchmarks and safeguards to ensure our products continue to exceed all industry standards.”
