VAUGHN, Ontario – Cara, a leading restaurant operator and franchisor in Canada, recently announced the company’s suppliers are working to adopt controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS) for broiler chickens.

Controlled atmosphere stunning technology is utilized at a growing number of pork, turkey and chicken slaughter establishments. Carbon dioxide stunning is thought to be one of the most reliable methods for inproving good animal welfare programs while maintaining meat quality.

Cara said the company is committed to having its suppliers begin converting their stunning systems to CAS by 2020, with the majority of suppliers fully converted by 2022. Currently, farmers in all 10 Canadian provinces supply Cara’s restaurants with chicken.

Cara operates 1,237 restaurants, 1,183 of which are in Canada and the remaining 54 locations are located internationally.
