Spam will open up the doors to a new museum soon.
AUSTIN, Minn. – The new home of all things SPAM is set to open April 22.
Hormel said visitors to the SPAM Museum will see a mix of new and old galleries. The new galleries include interactive components, while the old galleries are favorites taken from the old museum that was housed for 13 years in Hormel’s Corporate Office South.
Hormel announced plans in 2014 to move the museum to downtown Austin. The new facility is a single-story, 14,000-sq.-ft. building.
The first can of SPAM was produced in 1937 at the Austin plant. Today, Hormel’s Grocery Products (canning) segment produces 75 million lbs. of SPAM products per year. The company makes 11 varieties of SPAM, including SPAM hickory smoke flavored, SPAM less sodium, SPAM lite, SPAM hot and spicy and SPAM oven-roasted turkey, among others.
Admission to the museum is free, and hours of operation will be 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
