Hormel Foods celebrates all things SPAM.
AUSTIN, Minn. – Hormel Foods Corp. will break ground on the company's new SPAM Museum. A ceremony is scheduled for April 21.
In May 2014, Hormel announced plans to move the museum to downtown Austin, Minn. The current location of the museum is the company's Corporate Office South, where the museum has operated for 13 years. Design plans call for a 14,000 sq. ft. building spread out over one floor.
Hormel's Grocery Products (canning) segment produces 110 million lbs. of SPAM products, canned hams and ham patties per year – 75 million lbs. of which are SPAM products.
The first can of SPAM was produced in 1937 at the Austin plant. Currently, Hormel makes 11 varieties of SPAM, including SPAM hickory smoke flavored, SPAM less sodium, SPAM lite, SPAM hot and spicy and SPAM oven-roasted turkey, among others.
