Saval Foods to expand, double capacity

BALTIMORE – Saval Foods Corp. plans to double its production capacity with an upcoming $3 million expansion of its deli plant in Baltimore.
The addition of 3,300 sq. ft. for new cooking and cooling equipment is expected to double the 30,000-sq.-ft. plant’s capacity from 200,000 to 400,000 lbs., president and CEO Paul Saval told the Baltimore Sun. The plant is expected to be in operation by May, though not at full capacity right away, Saval added.
As part of the project, the company is seeking a $350,000 loan from the city, which will be considered by the Baltimore Board of Estimates at its meeting on Jan. 14. Saval purchased the processing plant after leasing it since 1999. The current plant employs 90 people, and the expansion will mean more jobs; though Saval didn’t say how many more.
The plant is part of one of three operations run by Saval Foods, founded in Baltimore in 1932. They are Deli Brands of America, which provides meat products to supermarkets, restaurants and food distributors around the country; Saval Food Service, an Elkridge-based food distributor serving restaurants; and Eats Press, a web-based restaurant marketing business.
