Hillshire showcases its stewardship

CHICAGO – Hillshire Brands Co. released its Corporate Social Responsibility report, which highlights the company's accomplishments in the areas of hunger, nourishment, environment and responsibility.
Hillshire’s partnership with Feeding America continued to grow, the report noted. The company made financial and product donations to various local food banks serving regions near Feeding America facilities. Hillshire Brands also donated more than 2.8 million lbs. of food to food banks in fiscal year 2013.
Initiatives under the nourishment pillar of the company's corporate responsibility strategy encompass food safety and quality, animal welfare, nutrition and wellness. Hillshire Brands’ meat and frozen bakery manufacturing facilities are Safe Quality Foods (SQF) certified, which subject them to a series of food safety and quality audits conducted by qualified third-party auditors. Hillshire also has developed and launched numerous better-for-you products with fewer calories and fat; no artificial colors, flavors or by-products; and more whole grains.
As part of its environmental stewardship, Hillshire Brands' corporate headquarters will soon be LEED certified. Additionally, the company's facilities continue to make progress toward reducing water and energy use and eliminating waste from operations.
Final corporate responsibility strategy focuses on employees, communities and partners. Employee-related programs range from worker safety to offering employees a comprehensive benefits package and job training programs. Hillshire Brand employees engage the community directly through blood drives, charity walks and volunteering with Meals on Wheels.
