TULARE, Calif. – Officials at J.D. Heiskell Holdings have taken steps to strengthen the company's animal-welfare practices following the release of an undercover video depicting workers abusing calves at Quanah Cattle Company in Kersey, Colo. J.D. Heiskell Holdings is a joint venture partner in Quanah Cattle.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office cited three workers at Quanah Cattle Company and the videographer, Taylor Radig for misdemeanor animal cruelty. Compassion Over Killing submitted the video to the sheriff's office on Nov. 12. Sheriff John Cooke said the investigation is ongoing.

Scot Hillman, chairman of the board, previously stated the company was "dismayed" by many of the images in the video.

"We learned about the incident at the same time the rest of the world did," Hillman said. "We took immediate corrective action and terminated the three individuals seen in the video. We are now focused on re-training employees and taking care of our animals. We have engaged a third party, animal-handling expert to do training for our employees at the facility and have implemented an animal-care code of conduct that all employees must read and sign prior to working."

Radig, a contractor for Compassion Over Killing, and former Quanah workers Larry Loma, Ernesto Daniel Valenzuela-Alvarez and Tomas Cerda were each cited for a misdemeanor charge of animal abuse that could result in six to 18 months in jail and a $500 to $5,000 fine.

You may think you will not be punished in this lifetime for the cruelty done to the animals at your 'company', but there is a higher judge you WILL have to face one day! Be ready with an answer!

Sorry to say this goes on more than anyone would like to believe. Its very sad that investigators serve a real purpose. The animals cannot speak for themselves. It is up to all of us to report and educate the public. However, it is so heart b:-) breaking people cannot bear to imagine or view this kind of treatment. We are given the stewardship of these animals by god. Its a shame that this goes on. Too many sick people working in these facilities. If people viewed the inside of these facilities/slaughterhouses, they would nenever eat meat again. Just disgusting..we should be thanking those who put their lives on the line for the animals.

Over and over when animal abuse evidence is provided the owners of these large agribusiness endeavors, the owners exclaim no knowledge of such practices, fire a few workers (who seem always to have Hispanic surnames)and then seek to prosecute those who brought the cruelty to their and the public's attention. It is virtually impossible to tear very young calves from their mothers, truck them to dirty, fly infested holding pens and/or to slaughter, without inflicting cruel measures. That said, closed circuit cameras and managers and owners who actually believed that the animals that provide their sustenance deserve respect and care might help alleviate the most egregious cruelty within this barbarous business.
