Meat, poultry companies mobilize disaster relief

SPRINGDALE, Ark. and AUSTIN, Minn. – Meat and poultry companies are contributing to disaster relief and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
Hormel Foods Corp. announced a donation of four semi-trailer loads of food to assist Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The donation includes two semi-trailers, or 110,400 Hormel Compleats microwave meals and two semi-trailers of Hormel brand pizza toppings white chicken cuts, which is approximately 156,000 packets, according to the company.
“Our thoughts are with those affected by this devastating event,” said Julie Craven, vice president of corporate communications at Hormel Foods. “As relief efforts begin, we hope these meals will provide a source of nourishment for so many in need.”
Tyson Foods pledged a corporate match of up to $100,000 of employee donations will go to support hurricane victims.
Tyson also sent its mobile feeding unit, Meals that Matter, and volunteer cook teams to New Jersey on Nov. 3. Teams from Tyson's corporate headquarters in Springdale, Ark., the company’s transportation group and a processing plant in Shelbyville, Tenn., will cook meals for first responders and hurricane victims as part of a partnership with the American Red Cross. Tyson Foods will provide the food for the meals.
“Our hearts go out to those who were in the path of the storm,” said Donnie Smith, president and chief executive officer of Tyson Foods. “Our company’s culture is to step up and help our neighbors, and we want to do that now with a dollar-for-dollar corporate match to one of the largest disaster relief organizations in America.”
