Meijer Marketplace emphasizes smaller-store concept
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Meijer is delivering another new concept to its Chicago-area customers as it prepares to open Meijer Marketplace, a smaller-format grocery store in Melrose Park, Ill. – less than two years after launching its first Marketplace store in the Chicago market.
Meijer Marketplace, totaling 96,000 sq. ft. in size, will be about half the size of Meijer's largest supercenters. Meijer planners, however, have worked to ensure the store has the benefits of larger Meijer stores – thus, offering a "mini" supercenter concept that provides local customers with a tailored grocery offering along with a broad variety of general merchandise items.
Much of the focus on the new store in Melrose Park will be on providing fresh quality meats and produce, as well as a wide variety of deli, bakery and pantry items. The new Meijer store will offer Hispanic and Italian foods, providing a new shopping option for the ethnically-diverse community.
"Our teams have worked very hard to design a store that serves the needs of customers in and near Melrose Park," said Mark Murray, president of Meijer. "We're very proud of this new store and all of our team members are looking forward to joining the Melrose Park community."
Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer operates 196 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
